School Essentials

Our School

Started in 2000, Hope Academy is a Christ-centered day school serving nearly 400 students in inner city Minneapolis with a remarkable, God-centered education. Our lower school serves students in grades K-5, while our upper school is composed of students in grades 6-12.

Our Mission

To foster hope in God within the inner-city neighborhoods of Minneapolis by providing youth with an outstanding, Christ-centered education.

Our Vision

Believing that all children are created for God’s glory and endowed by him with an inalienable potential to acquire wisdom and knowledge, Hope Academy covenants with urban families to equip their children to become the responsible, servant leaders of the 21st Century. Committed to the truth, discipline, and values of the gospel of Jesus Christ, Hope Academy pursues this aim by mobilizing educational, business, and community leaders towards the important goal of serving the children of Minneapolis with a remarkable education, permeated with a God-centered perspective. This inter-denominational school will seek to unleash kingdom citizens who work for justice, economic opportunity, racial harmony, hope for the family, and joy in the community.

Students

The student body reflects the rich diversity of the city of Minneapolis. Class sizes are limited to only 20 students per class.

Teaching Faculty

All of our faculty and staff embrace a Faith & Life Covenant. We encourage urban parents to focus on a school’s teachers for three crucial reasons:

    1. Great teachers make a great school
    1. Students become like their teachers
    1. Teachers are the “living cirriculum” of a school

In the lives of students, so much textbook content is forgotten; but the lessons that stay with them forever are the unspoken ones that come from the teacher, the “living cirriculum.”

Curriculum

Hope Academy’s educational plan utilizes an academically rigorous course of study that prepares students to deal purposefully and responsibly with the complex issues of living in this present society, as well as equipping students with the basic tools of learning within a God-Centered view of life. A classical education model is followed to give students a foundational knowledge of language, mathematics, science, history, and the arts.

The key elements of a classical education correspond with the four natural learning stages of a child:

    1. Beginning Grammar | Grades K-3 — Reading/Writing
    1. Grammar | Grades 3-6 — Writing
    1. Logic | Grades 7-9 — Thinking
    1. Rhetoric | Grades 10-12 — Speaking

Facilities

Currently located at 2300 Chicago Avenue South, we are committed to providing a clean, safe and secure learning environment for our students.

Uniforms

Uniforms give students a sense of belonging and create a stronger school identity within our community. We believe wearing uniforms can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically. Our uniforms differ by grade level (Lower School, K – 5th; Middle School, 6th – 8th; and High School, 9th – 12th) and are purchased at Donald’s Uniform Store.

Transportation

Bus transportation is provided free of charge to students living within the boundaries of Minneapolis.

Breakfast & Lunch

Breakfast is available for all students free of charge. A hot lunch is available for all students and is provided free of charge to those qualifying for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
